Full-length 4/3mm wetsuit in all sizes. Atlantic water stays 17 to 22°C. You’ll be comfortable year-round.
Certified Instructor
TPTD/IPDJ + ASI certified. In the water with you throughout, not watching from the beach.
Beach Transport
Transport from our base to the beach and back. No car, no navigation, no problem.
Rash Guard & Leash

From First Wave to Actually Surfing
No fixed programme, no promises about specific days. We teach you based on conditions, your level, and what the ocean gives us. Most students make real progress quickly. What that looks like depends on the person.

White water, where everyone starts
Beach briefing: paddling, positioning, the pop-up. Then into the white water. Broken waves, forgiving and consistent. Most students get to their feet. Everyone gets in the water.
Building consistency
Technique corrections: foot placement, weight distribution, timing. As conditions and level align, you’ll start catching green (unbroken) waves. This is where surfing stops feeling like a struggle.
Riding, not just surviving
Weight shifts, reading the wave’s sweet spot, basic direction changes. The pace is yours. Conditions, level, and what the ocean gives us that day all shape what’s possible.
Beach plans are set the evening before, based on swell, wind, tide, and the group’s level. We always go where the conditions are best for the people in the water that day. Sometimes that’s the calm south coast. Sometimes it’s the west coast where the Atlantic gives you proper waves to work with.

Meia Praia
Lagos’ calmest beach. Sheltered from Atlantic swell, small consistent waves, sandy bottom. Our first choice for beginners, children, and anyone starting from zero.
Porto de Mós
A step up from Meia Praia. Slightly more exposed, better wave shape. Good for the transition from white water to your first green, unbroken waves.
Arrifana
Where learning starts to look like surfing. Wide bay, consistent Atlantic swell, longer rides. One of our most-used beaches for developing surfers.
Amoreira
A quiet stretch of Costa Vicentina with long, consistent waves and almost no crowds. Our go-to when conditions on the west coast favour semi-private and private groups.
Safety briefing before every session. Instructors assess conditions daily, identify safe entry points, and always select the appropriate beach for your level. Lessons run in supervised groups on foam boards in water no deeper than chest height. All instructors hold first aid certification.

Our Certified Surf Instructors
All instructors hold the mandatory TPTD/IPDJ qualification, the Portuguese government’s legal requirement for commercial surf instruction. All instructors also hold ASI (Australian Surf Instructors Association) certification.
TPTD/IPDJ is the minimum legal standard to teach surfing commercially in Portugal. Not every school in Lagos is fully licensed. We’ve operated legally and transparently for over 20 years. Every instructor teaching for us has earned the right to do so.

Kids Surf Lessons in Lagos
Over 20 years teaching children to surf in Lagos. Kids’ groups are capped at 4 children per instructor, smaller, safer, and more attentive than anything you’ll find at a bigger school. Sessions take place at Meia Praia, the calmest, most sheltered beach near Lagos.

Everything you need to know before you book.
Group lessons at Algarve Watersport in Lagos start at €65/day and get cheaper the more days you book: Day 1 to 2 €65, Day 3 €55, Day 4 €50, Day 5+ €45. The 5-day course totals €280 (€290 in August peak). Semi-private lessons cost €120 per person per day. Private 1-to-1 lessons cost €200 for 2 hours. All prices include equipment and transport.
Yes. The majority of guests at Algarve Watersport have never been on a surfboard before. Every lesson starts with a 20-minute beach theory session. More than 80% of complete beginners stand up on their first lesson. No prior fitness level or swimming ability beyond basic ocean comfort is required.
Every surf lesson at Algarve Watersport includes: full-length 4/3mm wetsuit, soft-top beginner surfboard, rash guard, safety leash, transport from our base to the beach and back, a beach safety briefing, and a 2-hour lesson (approximately 1.5 hours in the water plus warm-up and theory) with a TPTD/IPDJ and ASI certified instructor. Just bring a towel, sunscreen, and swimwear.
Each lesson is 2 hours in total — approximately 1.5 hours in the water, plus a beach safety briefing and warm-up before you paddle out. Plan for around 2.5 hours at the beach from arrival to finish. Two hours is the standard for beginner instruction. Any longer and the information and physical load starts to work against you.
Yes. Algarve Watersport offers surf lessons for children from age 7 upwards in Lagos. Kids’ groups have a maximum of 4 children per instructor, more individual attention than adult group lessons. Sessions take place at Meia Praia, Lagos’ calmest and most sheltered beach. Contact us for current kids pricing when booking.
Algarve Watersport uses four main beaches. Meia Praia and Porto de Mós (south coast, 5 to 10 minutes from Lagos) for beginners and children. Arrifana and Amoreira (west coast, 30 to 40 km north) for developing surfers. Beach is chosen the evening before based on conditions and the group’s level. Beach transport is always included.

Lessons use foam boards in water no deeper than chest height. All instructors hold first aid certification. At Meia Praia, used for all beginners, there are no rip currents or dangerous shore breaks.
