Ria de Alvor is a lagoon between Alvor and Lagos, about 15 minutes from Lagos. The lagoon is sheltered from ocean waves and offers flat water conditions, making it an excellent spot for beginners and advanced kiters. The lagoon is an almost ideal teaching spot with shallow water and consistent wind where you find all the kite schools during windy days. The lagoon has the most consistent winds in the summer, with Nortada offshore wind starting to blow in the early afternoon till sunset reaching very often 20+ knots. Lagoon is considered the best summer kitesurfing spot in Algarve with many sunny and windy days from May till end of September.

The best wind directions for the lagoon are North and Northwest as wind is most reliable. West and Southwest as the most stable light winds during the midday breeze. Lagoon has many access points from Alvor and Lagos, with the most popular kite beach on the Lagos side where you can meet many kitesurfers. The best is to park a car next to oyster farms and walk over the pier to the set-up spot. There are a few hazards worth considering while kiting in a lagoon. First is the channel connecting the lagoon with the Ocean, which can create strong currents during the full moon and no moon periods. Also, its worth watching out for the lagoon’s rocky sides and trying not to kite over oyster farms. For more detailed guide check out: Lagos Kitesurfing guide

Tips: Kite in high tide conditions to have more space and avoid schools. Find spots with sandbars to kite in super flat waters.

Intermediate–Advanced

Meia Praia is a long sandy beach located just outside of Lagos. The beach is ideal for kiteboarding due to its vast open space and easy access. On Meia praia, kitesurfers will be mainly seen with south winds that are more common in winter months, but from time to time, few advanced riders are kiting with offshore winds in the summer. We do not recommend kiting on Meia Praia without any boat support or rescue as it’s side – offshore wind in the summer. On the other hand, with good west and South east winds is one of the best spots to kitesurf on waves on the south coast. What’s worth to mention here is that according to local laws you should not launch or land a kite in the sunbeds areas of the beach which is the biggest chunk of it. Therefore is best to kite from Bar Quim till Lagoon.

We run a beach station at Meia Praia — read more about our Meia Praia beach station

Porto de Mos is another possible kiteboarding spot located just outside of Lagos. The beach offers good conditions on south west winds when Meia Praia is too light. Kitesurfing in Porto de mos require good understanding of waves and currents as it’s not the easiest spot. The strong currents and cliffs at the end of the beach might be challenging for beginners riders. Nevertheless the beach is one of our favorite for surfing and it’s just awesome for swimming and sunbathing, making it a good choice for families and groups.

Martinhal is a small beach located near Sagres, about 30 minutes from Lagos. The beach offers great conditions in the summer with little gusty side offshore winds and flat waters. Some call it best Nortada speed spot. While in the summer beach can be busy with people sunbathing in the afternoons crowd is shrinking fast getting blasted by the wind. The beach is not as crowded as some of the other spots on this list, making it a great choice for those looking for a quieter spot. In the winter Martinhal can be tricky with south winds as it creates a lot of shorebreak waves and currents.

Praia da Bordeira is a beautiful, secluded beach located on the west coast of the Algarve, about an hour’s drive from Lagos. The beach is known for its powerful waves and is a popular spot for surfers and kitesurfers. With its north winds coming side onshore, Bordeira is excellent but not the most accessible spot. The beach is not recommended for beginners due to the strong currents and large waves. Amado and Monte Clerigo are less-known kitesurfing spots with similar conditions as Bordeira but are much smaller beaches. Amado works with NW, but you will mostly see surfers there, although is worth to mention it’s getting popular among wingfoiling riders. Monte Clerigo is also not so popular spot, but with the right wind direction, you can have a great session with side shore winds and medium waves. In conclusion, Lagos and the surrounding area offer some of the best kitesurfing spots in Portugal, with something to suit every level of rider. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced kitesurfer, the region offers a wide variety of beaches and conditions to choose from. Just make sure to check the wind conditions before heading out and always kite safely.
