Where do we teach?
You will learn to kite surf in one of Portugal’s best spots at our Lagos kitesurf school! On the Ria do Alvor, a lagoon situated couple minutes from our base on the way to Alvor, our qualified instructors will show you the basics of kiteboarding on optimal wind and water conditions with top-of-the-line kite equipment. Lagoon welcomes us daily with shallow waters and plenty of space to practice.
Between May and August, lagoon becomes best spot to kitesurf in Algarve with daily wind reaching speeds between 15 to 25 knots in the afternoon offering excellent wind conditions for kitesurfers of every level.

At Algarve Watersport from more than 16 years we are getting new students hooked on this amazing sport. As an official VDWS Kiteboarding center we offer different types of lessons to match everyone’s progression curve.
Each of the lesson types has its benefits and can be ideal for different people.

Group Lesson
During the group lesson, you will share a kite with another person—an ideal lesson for beginners and people who don’t want to rush.
Maximum 4 people per instructor – sharing equipment and instructor.
The lesson take 3 hours.
Semi-private lesson
Recommended lesson for people who already tried kitesurfing and are safe with the kite. A student has their own equipment but shares an instructor.
The lesson takes 2,5 hours.
Private lesson
Are you working on the body dragging or first jumps? Learn basics and advanced techniques with the undivided attention of your instructor.
Lesson takes min 2.5 hours.

Certified Instructors
Our kite students are coached by the patient, multilingual and well-trained and certified kite instructors. We certify our students with IKO or VDWS certifications.
New Equipment
The modern and easy-to-use equipment of our kite school ensures your safety on the water and a fast learning effect. We have a wide range of kite material for beginners and advanced kiters from Shinn boards and North and Cabrinha kites.
Modern Teaching Methods
Our lessons are accompanied by a rescue boat (during high tide) and customer video analysis (on request). Our instructors are trained in modern teaching techniques. We also use a radio system for advanced students (on request)
Safe and Flat Spot
Our spot – Ria do Alvor is a shallow and flat lagoon, where you can start your journey with kitesurfing in a nice and easy way. We are always trying to schedule our lessons during mid and low tide.

Lesson for intermediate riders who want to work on higher jumps, first rotation, and first unhooked tricks. The student decides on his goal for the lesson :)
Requirement: Student has to be independent and be able to ride upwind and perform small jumps.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
You only have to bring a swimming suit or board shorts, a towel, sunscreen (zinc), water, and a good mood for our kitesurfing lessons. We provide all the necessary equipment for the lesson, from a wetsuit, kitesurfing harness ( seat or waist), and kite equipment. We do not recommend taking personal belongings except the phone. For the sunscreen option, we recommend buying zinc, as regular sunscreen will wash off with the water pretty fast.
As the lagoon has some shells at the bottom, we also recommend taking neoprene booties for extra protection.
We are always offering different level Kitesurf lessons. Our clients will be divided into groups according to kiteboarding level. Please let us know your level when you book. Please assess yourself honestly since, only then, we can promise the best learning results.
We are the official VDWS-licensed kiteboarding center. You can purchase a certification after the course to document your kitesurf level and be able to rent kiteboarding equipment from kite centers worldwide. If you would like to request an IKO certification – please speak with our head instructor :)
Due to the tidal dependence of the lagoon and the fact that the thermal wind strengthens in the afternoon, the optimal learning conditions fall within the time frame when we are teaching. Additionally, our experience has shown that 95% of our students are too exhausted after the intensive training to continue practicing afterward.
For safety reasons, we only rent our equipment to experienced independent kiters, and only during our scheduled lesson hours.
At our school, we prioritize your learning experience by following IKO standards and ensuring small group sizes. In our group lessons, we have a maximum of 4 people per instructor, allowing for personalized attention and effective instruction. Even when the groups are at their maximum capacity, we ensure that only two beginners share a kite, ensuring a safe and optimal learning environment.
For those who have progressed in their kite control skills, we also offer semi-private lessons. These lessons are designed for 2 to a maximum of 3 people per instructor, allowing for even more focused and tailored guidance. Once you have reached this level, you can practice further with your own kite, enhancing your skills and confidence.
In addition, we provide private lessons during the low season. These one-on-one sessions offer the ultimate personalized experience. Priced at 80€ per person per hour, with a minimum of 2-hour lessons, you will receive dedicated attention and guidance to accelerate your progress.
Whether you choose our group lessons, semi-private lessons, or private lessons, we are committed to providing you with a safe and effective learning environment, ensuring that you make the most out of your kiteboarding journey.
Our instructors teach in our personalized methodology to make your kitesurfing journey as fun and as full of progression as possible. But of course, all our instructors are certified by at least one of the biggest Kiteboarding organizations – IKO and VDWS. If you finish a course you can purchase a license card from either of the organizations and our instructors will make sure you will be licensed according to IKO or VDWS standards.
It typically takes around 6 to 9 hours to grasp the fundamentals of kitesurfing. Consequently, within a span of two to three days, one can acquire the skills to safely control the kite, know safety systems, and understand the fundamentals of body dragging and starting with the board. The majority of our students try their first time riding the board on the second or third day, previously learning all necessary steps like: set up, kite control, body dragging, and body dragging with the board.
The “Nortada” wind is an awesome thermal wind that gets stronger as the day goes on, peaking in the afternoon. It creates the perfect conditions for kitesurfing, and we want to teach you during these epic moments.
We do our lessons at a lagoon that’s influenced by the tides. We usually choose the mid-tide time because it’s the easiest for learning. We’re all about making sure you have a great time!
Our kitesurf lessons usually start between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, depending on when the conditions are just right. We’ll let you know the meeting time the day before, and we’ll meet at our kitesurfing school base in Lagos. From there, it’s just a short 15-minute drive to the lagoon where the fun begins.
You’ll spend a solid 2-3 hours in the water, really getting the hang of kitesurfing with our super experienced instructors. The whole trip takes about 5 hours, including getting to and from the lagoon, setting up the kites, and learning some theory stuff.

Kitesurfing and surfing are challenging water sports requiring much skill and practice. However, they are different regarding the techniques and equipment used, and it’s difficult to say whether one is inherently “harder” than the other. From our experience, learning to kitesurf is different from all the other spots because it connects many skills into one sport.
Surfing might seem more rewarding at first, as catching the first wave on the white water is relatively easy, but the learning curve gets little steeper.
Kitesurfing is the opposite. Controlling the kite seems very hard initially, but with time and instructions, it gets very intuitive. It’s very beneficial for kitesurfing to practice other board sports, especially wakeboarding and snowboarding, as the board’s feeling is very similar.
Both sports are very fun; in both cases, it’s all about learning through fun and experiencing nature’s beauty. We recommend everyone to try both of them :)
