Why the Algarve for your surf camp?

Portugal’s sunniest region. Two coastlines, 15+ breaks, and the longest water sports season in the country. The Algarve isn’t just a good place to surf — it’s the best one.

Wave icon
Two coastlines. Always a wave.

The Algarve’s west coast catches Atlantic groundswells. The south coast stays protected when the west is too big. Our instructors pick the right beach every morning. There are almost no flat days here.

Season icon
Warmest water, longest season

The Algarve has 300+ days of sunshine per year. Water reaches 22°C in summer. Season runs April through October — longer than Peniche or Ericeira, and noticeably warmer.

Multi-sport icon
6 water sports, one region

The Ria de Alvor — a flat-water lagoon 20 minutes from camp — is Portugal’s best spot for learning kite and wing foil. Combined with the surf coast, the Algarve is the only region where all 6 sports work in one week.

Algarve icon
Cliffs, old towns, good evenings

When you’re not in the water: Lagos old town, Ponta da Piedade cliffs, boat trips to sea caves, restaurants, nightlife. The Algarve has the coastline and the culture. Most guests want to come back the following year.

Where do you surf in the Algarve?

The Algarve coastline splits into two: the west coast catches Atlantic swells, the south coast stays sheltered. Our instructors choose from 8+ breaks — confirmed the evening before, so you always get the right beach for your level.

Arrifana beach with surfers and dramatic Algarve cliffs

Arrifana

40 min drive

Sheltered west-coast bay with a mellow point break. Our go-to when it's big from the northwest.

Aerial view of Meia Praia beach with surfers and scenic Algarve coastline

Meia Praia

5 min walk

The longest beach in the Algarve. Wide, sandy, gentle. Perfect for first-timers.

Small surf group with instructor on Amoreira beach with Algarve cliffs

Amoreira

45 min drive

Open to the Atlantic with a river mouth. Best on smaller days for consistent, clean waves.

Elevated view of surf lesson at Porto de Mos beach with Algarve cliffs

Porto de Mós

10 min drive

Sheltered south-coast beach just outside Lagos. Our backup when the west coast is too big.

Our instructors pick from 8+ breaks across the West and South Coast. Big northwest swell? Arrifana. Small and clean? Amoreira. Huge west swell? We head to Meia Praia or Porto de Mós. There’s always somewhere to surf.

Not just surfing You can switch to kite, wingfoil, windsurf or wakeboard mid-week. Tell the office by 4 PM the day before. Six sports, one camp. No other place in the Algarve offers that.

Your questions about surf camp in the Algarve

No. Most guests are complete beginners. Our instructors are ASI certified and work with all levels, from people who've never touched a board to intermediates chasing green waves. Max 6 per group, so you get proper attention.
Everything you need for the week: 7 nights accommodation, 5 days of surf lessons, breakfast and dinner daily (plus Wednesday pizza night), yoga, all surf equipment, and transport to the beach. The only extras are lunch and drinks at the bar.
Yes. 51% of our guests travel solo. Communal dinners, shared surf vans, and the Couch of Happiness make it easy to meet people from day one. Most solo guests say making friends was the easiest part.
The Algarve has both west-facing and south-facing coasts, with 15+ surf spots. Our instructors pick the best break each morning. When one coast is flat, the other usually isn't. Plus you can switch to kite, wingfoil, wakeboard, or SUP any day.
You stay at The Kitehouse, our camp compound in Lagos, a 5-minute walk to Meia Praia. Base packages include a shared dorm. Upgrades available: twin rooms, bungalows, and apartments. Pool, garden, Baraka Bar, safes and Wi-Fi throughout.
Yes. We offer 6 sports: surf, kite, wingfoil, wakeboard, SUP, and windsurf. Switch mid-week by telling the office by 4 PM the day before. That kind of flexibility is what makes this place different.
Yes. Kids from age 7 join surf lessons in small groups (max 4 per instructor). Parents need to be at the beach for under-16s. Family bungalows and apartments with kitchens available. For family bookings, get in touch so we can plan the best setup.

We run camps April through October. April to June: smaller crowds, lower prices, consistent surf. July to August: peak season, warmer water, more guests, best wind for kite and wingfoil. September to October: shoulder-season value with great surf. The Algarve has 300+ days of sunshine. There's no bad time.
A deposit secures your booking. More than 6 weeks out: full refund minus deposit. Between 6 and 4 weeks: deposit forfeited. Closer to the start: partial charges apply. Full terms on our Terms & Conditions page.
Three things set the Algarve apart. First, two coastlines: the west catches Atlantic swells, the sheltered south is a backup when the west is too big. Second, warmth: water reaches 22°C in summer, season runs April–October — longer than Peniche or Ericeira. Third, variety: the Ria de Alvor flat-water lagoon makes kite and wing foil lessons possible — something you can’t do at most Portuguese surf camps.
Yes — one of the best beginner surf destinations in Europe. The south coast beaches are protected, mellow, and consistent in summer. Meia Praia, 5 minutes from camp, has long easy waves ideal for first-timers. In 20 years of running camps here, most absolute beginners are standing up within the first two days.
Lagos old town is 5 minutes away — good restaurants, bars, and famous cobblestone streets. Ponta da Piedade (golden cliffs, sea caves, kayaking) is one of Portugal’s most scenic spots and a short drive from camp. Boat trips, Sagres, Cape St Vincent (the southwestern tip of Europe) — all within 30–45 minutes. Most guests are surprised how much the Algarve has beyond the beach.
