What to do in Lagos in winter?
Surfing , surfing and surfing! Surfing takes center stage in Lagos when the summer heat subsides. With milder temperatures and consistent swells, the Atlantic Ocean gifts surfers with conditions that are nothing short of magical. Unlike summer, in winter, south coast surf spots in Lagos like Meia Praia or Porto de Mos are on fire almost every day with small and friendly waves.
Why Winter Surfing in Lagos?
- Consistent Conditions: The winter swell brings reliable waves, making it the ideal time for steady progress and adventure. Swell is coming to Lagos almost every day, and even if its coming from south west and not hitting Meia Praia well, Porto de Mos or Praia da Rocha in Portimao work just fine.
- “Not so crowded beaches”: With fewer tourists, you have more room to ride the waves and enjoy the winter swell. But don’t expect empty beaches.. when the west coast is to big to ride, the south coast can get pretty busy, especially in the afternoon when it’s warmer. Luckily on Meia Praia beach you can choose from 5 km of different peaks if you don’t want to fight for every wave.
- Optimal Winds for Surfing: Gentle winter breezes are perfect for surfing. You will find on some days that the waves are completely glassy as the thermal wind effects are almost nonexistent. So if it’s a sunny day and you see no clouds, there is a big chance you can surf glassy waves that day.
- Beach is right there!: Literary you can walk with your surfboard from home to catch waves. At least from our Colliving surf house :)
