Kitesurfing at Meia Praia
Meia Praia is the hidden gem of kitesurfing near Lagos. Known for its long, sandy beach, deep water conditions, and vast open space, it offers something most south coast spots don’t: room to breathe. Whether you’re here for south wind wave sessions in winter or looking for flat offshore water in summer, Meia Praia has a character all its own.
Kitesurfing conditions at Meia Praia
Located just outside of Lagos, Meia Praia is a long, sandy beach that provides an excellent setting for kiteboarding with its extensive open space and convenient access. Kitesurfers frequent the beach during the winter months when the south winds are more common. With the right west and southeast winds, Meia Praia can be treated as one of the top wave kitesurfing spots on the south coast.
In the summer kitesurfing in Meia Praia calms down to the summer winds’ offshore nature, which makes it a bit more advanced and tricky spot. Nevertheless, even with everyday summer winds kiting is possible, but boat support is advised.
Wind Conditions by Season
South & SE Winds
Ideal for wave kitesurfing — side-onshore conditions that make Meia Praia one of the top wave kite spots on the south coast. Best sessions with W and SE. Boat support still recommended.
Offshore North Winds
Flat, glassy water — but more technically demanding. The wind pushes you out to sea, so do not go without boat support. Good for experienced riders and wingfoilers.
Meia Praia is a long beach with a big sunbed area running most of its length. According to local rules, you cannot launch or land a kite in the sunbed areas — which is most of the beach. The spot that works is from Bar Quim at the western end towards the lagoon. This section has enough space to set up safely without disturbing anyone.
Kite zone: From Bar Quim to the Lagoon (western end). Avoid the sunbed areas in the middle and eastern sections of the beach. If you’re unsure, arrive early and scope it out before setting up.
The deep water conditions are particularly advantageous — you’re not wading through shallow sandbars like at the lagoon. The spacious and less crowded beach provides ample room to set up and practise without distractions. And in winter, the wave quality here is genuinely good: south and SE swells come in cleanly with the right wind angle for proper wave riding.
Summer safety: The summer winds at Meia Praia are offshore. Do not kite here in summer without boat support or a self-rescue plan. The water is deep and the wind pushes you away from the shore. Always tell someone where you’re going.
Meia Praia is not only great for kitesurfing but also an amazing spot for wingfoiling. The inconsistent winds are not as big a problem for wingfoilers as they are for kitesurfers. The wide-open space enables longer, uninterrupted runs, helping wingfoilers maintain higher speeds for extended periods — crucial for building endurance and performance. Additionally, the less crowded nature of Meia Praia means wingfoilers can practise in a more relaxed and enjoyable environment, fully appreciating the thrill of speed and the scenic beauty of the surroundings.
Meia Praia is 3km east of Lagos town centre — about a 10-minute drive. Take the N125 towards Portimão and turn right after the marina bridge following the Meia Praia signs. Free parking is available at the western end of the beach. That western end, near Bar Quim, is where you want to set up.
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we hear most from kiters and wingfoilers before their first session at Meia Praia.
In winter, south and SE winds are ideal — side-onshore conditions that make Meia Praia one of the top wave kite spots on the south coast. West also works well. In summer, north offshore winds create flat, glassy water but require boat support. Avoid kiting here alone in summer offshore conditions.
Local rules prohibit launching and landing kites in the sunbed areas, which cover most of the beach. The usable kite zone is from Bar Quim at the western end towards the lagoon. Arrive at the western end, scope the space, and set up away from the sunbeds and swimmers.
Not ideal for complete beginners. The Alvor Lagoon, 15 minutes from Lagos, is a much better starting point — shallow, flat water, consistent wind, and onshore. Meia Praia is better for intermediate to advanced riders who are comfortable with changing conditions and understand offshore wind risks.
Yes, but the conditions change significantly. Summer brings north offshore winds — flat and glassy, great for freeride, but the wind pushes you out to sea. Boat support is strongly advised. Do not kite here alone in summer without a solid self-rescue plan or backup on the water.
Yes — arguably better for wingfoiling than kitesurfing in summer. The inconsistent offshore winds that make kiting tricky are much less of a problem on a wing. Wide open space, flat water, and very few other riders make it an excellent wingfoiling spot from spring through autumn.
