Why Lagos?

Lagos is the outdoor sports capital of the southern Algarve. Historic old town, golden cliffs, and Meia Praia — the longest beach in the region — five minutes from camp.

The town: old walls, cobblestones, good food

Lagos has a walled old town that’s actually worth exploring. 16th-century churches, cobblestone streets, fishing boats in the marina, and restaurants serving fresh catch. Friday evening is free — most guests end up in the old town. Some stay there till midnight.

Ponta da Piedade: the cliffs

Five kilometres from camp, the orange limestone cliffs of Ponta da Piedade are one of Portugal’s most photographed landscapes. Walk the clifftop path, take a boat into the sea caves, or kayak from the beach below. Worth at least one afternoon.

Meia Praia: right on your doorstep

The longest beach in the Algarve. Wide, sandy, calm — a 5-minute walk from The Kitehouse. When conditions suit, we surf here. When we head to the west coast, you still have Meia Praia for the afternoon.

Getting here

Faro airport is 70 km away — about an hour’s drive. Direct flights from London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Warsaw, Prague, and Dublin. We offer airport transfers for €80 per booking. Car rental at Faro gives you wheels for the week.

Where do you surf from Lagos?

Arrifana beach with surfers and dramatic Algarve cliffs

Arrifana

40 min drive

Sheltered west-coast bay with a mellow point break. Our go-to when it's big from the northwest.

Aerial view of Meia Praia beach with surfers and scenic Algarve coastline

Meia Praia

5 min walk

The longest beach in the Algarve. Wide, sandy, gentle. Perfect for first-timers.

Small surf group with instructor on Amoreira beach with Algarve cliffs

Amoreira

45 min drive

Open to the Atlantic with a river mouth. Best on smaller days for consistent, clean waves.

Elevated view of surf lesson at Porto de Mos beach with Algarve cliffs

Porto de Mós

10 min drive

Sheltered south-coast beach just outside Lagos. Our backup when the west coast is too big.

Our instructors pick from 8+ breaks across the West and South Coast. Big northwest swell? Arrifana. Small and clean? Amoreira. Huge west swell? We head to Meia Praia or Porto de Mós. There’s always somewhere to surf.

Not just surfing You can switch to kite, wingfoil, windsurf or wakeboard mid-week. Tell the office by 4 PM the day before. Six sports, one camp. No other place in the Algarve offers that.

Lagos is a historic walled town at the western edge of the Algarve — 16th-century fortifications, cobblestone streets, a fishing marina, and some of the best cliff scenery in Portugal. It’s big enough to have good restaurants and nightlife, small enough to walk everywhere. The outdoor sports scene is the best in the south: surf, kite, wing foil, kayaking, hiking, boat trips. Most guests say it feels more like a real Portuguese town than a tourist resort — because it is.
Plenty. Ponta da Piedade — dramatic orange cliffs and sea caves — is a 15-minute walk. Boat tours into the grottos leave from the marina daily. The old town has restaurants, bars, and live music most evenings. Mid-week you can switch to kite, wing foil, wakeboard, or SUP at camp. Sagres and Cape St Vincent are 30 minutes by car. There’s no shortage of things to do when you’re out of the water.
Excellent. Lagos has a strong backpacker and outdoor sports community, so meeting people independently is easy. Add to that: 51% of our camp guests travel solo. Communal dinners, shared surf vans, and the camp’s social setup mean you’ll have a group by day two. Most solo guests say making friends was the easiest part — and Lagos makes it even easier.
